Hi! We ran your question by the kind folks at MSR and came up with lots of information!
First off, it’s not a trivial task to remove the bite valve or cap the connection. The tight connection ensures leak-free performance and there’s little chance either would fall off accidently. However, the Hydration Kit parts are replacement, so you can remove or replace both the bite valve and connector cap.
The easiest way to clean your hydration hose does not require any removal. Simply fill the Dromedary or DromLite with water and hold it over a sink or garden bed while you pinch the bite valve and run water through the hose. If you wish to sterilize your hydration system, MSR recommends diluting a couple drops of bleach into the water.
Should you need to remove the bite valve to replace or for thorough cleaning, you’ll need to run it under hot water to loosen the food grade polyethylene liner. Cap end removal might be slightly more difficult.
In addition, the bite valve features a two part design. You can remove the clear piece of the bite valve (that you bite on) to access the connection between the hose and bite valve and do a thorough cleaning.
Hope this information helps! We can’t stress enough that MSR does a fantastic job designing serviceable products that integrate seamlessly.
